My journey this year
In under two months, I went from the scripts and configs of a sysadmin to team projects and working applications. My background in IT systems and networks gave me a strong foundation to learn fast and apply new skills immediately.
Where I started, where I am
Front-end
September: 1 out of 5, now: 2 out of 5.
From no web pages at all to a responsive, accessible multi-page site and a working job board interface.Job boardThis portfolio
Back-end / APIs
September: 1 out of 5, now: 2 out of 5.
I designed a relational database with per-user encryption, a PHP API, and the Node.js API behind the Lab page.Job boardThis portfolio
Linux & networking
September: 3 out of 5, now: 3 out of 5.
Already my job before Epitech; this year I went further with LoRaWAN, Zero Trust access, a public API exposed safely, and a default-deny firewall in front of Docker.LoRa sensor gridHomelab/e/OS port for the Galaxy A56
DevOps / CI
September: 1 out of 5, now: 2 out of 5.
My projects now deploy in one command with Docker Compose, and this site publishes itself with GitHub Actions on every push.Job boardThis portfolio
Team work
September: 2 out of 5, now: 3 out of 5.
I built the job board as a pair, sharing one repo and one schema; the Java game engine, starting in November, is next.Job board
Timeline
September 2026
Started the Pré-MSc at Epitech Montpellier
Project: Epitech pools (Python and Java) →Back to school after four years in the field. The Python pool was a fast reset: a new subject every day and automated grading every evening.
September 2026
My own Android build boots on the Galaxy A56
Project: /e/OS port for the Galaxy A56 →After a failed first boot that relocked the bootloader, my own /e/OS build reached the lock screen, with touch, sound, ADB and Wi-Fi working.
October 2026
Calls and SMS working on my /e/OS port
Project: /e/OS port for the Galaxy A56 →With the open-source PhhIms stack, the port can call, text and use 4G: it’s now usable as a daily phone.
October 2026
Job board with Léa Bossuat
Project: Job board →First team project of the year: a database designed for GDPR from the start, and a stack that deploys in one command.
October 2026
Hardening my homelab after the move
Project: Homelab →The new ISP box after my move gave the server a public IPv6 address, and a setup designed behind IPv4 NAT suddenly exposed its Docker services. I caught it while bringing the homelab back, then rebuilt it so it no longer relies on NAT: a default-deny nftables firewall and everything behind the reverse proxy, down to a single TLS port. I learned to test exposure from outside every time the network changes.
October 2026
Portfolio and live Lab page online
Project: This portfolio →The site went live with its Lab page, fed by the monitoring stack and API running on my homelab.
Upcoming
Java game engine project
Next Epitech project: a 2D game engine in Java, built from scratch.
Challenges I hit
- Going back to school after four years of work. Daily exercises graded every evening are a very different rhythm from tickets and on-call. I treated the pools like a job: a fixed routine and asking for help early.
- Bricking my test phone. My first /e/OS boot failed and relocked the bootloader, and Samsung's protections blocked every way back. I restored the stock firmware, then wrote a check script that compares my build to stock before every flash.
- Looking for the bug in the wrong place. My server kept freezing on writes and I first blamed the software. The real causes were a faulty SATA cable and slow SMR drives. Now I check the hardware and the logs before touching any config.
What I'm working on next
- The Java game engine, my next Epitech project, starting in November: designing a real architecture instead of a pile of scripts.
- Finishing the /e/OS port: fingerprint, camera, Bluetooth audio and my own signing keys, then asking for official /e/OS support.
- Tests and CI on my own projects, so "it runs" also means "it's tested".
- Bringing the 3D printer back onto this site's Lab page.
